Book Nine shows the turning point in the action of the Epic. The Greeks feel that there is no point in fighting for a lost cause since they are doomed forever. Agamemnon, in order to stir them into action, makes some insinuating remarks.

Diomedes roundly charges him with cowardice and decides that even if everybody goes back home he along with Stuenelus will fight to the last ditch. Nester advises Agamemnon to send an embassy to Achilles and tender an apology to him, which will persuade him to fight again.

The embassy should consist of Ajax, Ulysses, and Phoenix. They go and find Achilles playing upon a lyre to relieve his pensive mind. As soon as he sees his visitors, he rises and accords them a hearty welcome. He also asks his friend Patroclus to prepare food and drinks for them.

After a heavy repast, and the Greeks are excellent trencher men, Ulysses appeals to Achilles with all his persuasiveness at his command to forget the past and help the Greeks in their more need. Briseis will be restored to him, and he will be offered one of the daughters of Agamemnon in marriage and a kingdom, beside a vast treasure of wealth and the choicest horses.

The national honour is at stake, and everybody reasonably hopes that Achilles will rise to the occasion. Achilles is given neither to persuasiveness nor to national sentiments. He just does not bother for beautiful women and wealth. Persuasive eloquence of Ulysses and Phoenix fails, its only natural that the matter-of-fact approach of the blunt Ajax will have no effect either. Ajax wonders and for a single girl. he offer seven. They return disappointed. Diomedes alone remains undaunted.
