Homer The Iliad Book 11 Summary Book Eleven contains a vivid record of the third battle. Agamemnon is the hero of at least a part of the day. At the behest of Jupiter the goddess, Hate goes to the battle field to fill the soldiers with an insatiable thirst for blood. Agamemnon in full fury plunges into the battle and stags the rules of Antinaches.

He sends Patroclus to enquire about an injured Greek soldier, being removed from the field. Patroclus comes and ascertains that Machon is lying wounded. Analysis Book- 11 In Book Nine Achilles gave a categorical reply to the entreaties of the Greek chiefs that he would not participate in the battle. He is filled with deep pity and sympathy when he happens to know that their physician, who is not supposed to fight at all, is lying injured, while, he the greatest of the heroes, is dissociated from bloody warfare. That Patroclus will fight with Achilles, armour on it sufficiently foreshadowed. And we know that Patroclus, death will prove a turning point in Achilles Career-nay of the entire course of the war. There is a striking contrast between the Greek and Trojan fighters. The Greeks fight with a dogged determination. It is quite a job for the Greeks to persuade Diomedes, Ulysses, Ajax and Eurypylus to withdraw from the battle- eld , although they are disabled and injured. The sons of Antimachus -the representatives of the Trojans beg mercy, when threatened with death.
