In Custody summary
In custody by Anita Desai chapter-5 summary.
In this chapter, we come to know that it is Murad who has prevailed on Nur to have Daven as his secretary. Now Murad plays with Deven's fears and uncertainty in taking up the job, because of his commitments to his college work and family responsibilities.
Nur reminds him of Guru shishya relationship and how much he can learn from them. Deven cannot asset himself and push himself to visit Nur fearing the Ugly scene happening again in front of him. But when he reaches their house he witnesses something uglier and more revolting Nur's second wife Imtiaz Begum's is celebrating her birthday and she recites the poems of Nur's and gains all the attention while Nur is pushed into a corner.
Rows of "large well-fed, passive men with splendid caps" from the audience loudly applauded Imtiaz Begum's rendition of her trite poems, a rehash of Nur's poetry. She uses all the tricks of her trade to entertain them. Deven feels disguised and Nur keeps on drinking when he could see no more, he moves into a room on the lower floor with Daven's help. Deven's ordeal is, however far from over. Imtiaz starts taunting her husband that how jealous he is of her popularity.
Deven can tape the memoirs as well as edit them and produce a book on them. This would take care of poems, of his perilous finances. Deven is taken in again by Murad's "Brilliant idea" which land him in further trouble. Having spent two evenings with Nur he understands how both of them are trapped into a vicious circle-Deven with his ill-paid at college and his loveless life, and Nur with a great past behind and leading a dissolute life and is caught up with two wires.
Both of them cannot escape their fortunes. Both are poor and without resources to hope for deliverance. These situations are similar and this establishes a bond between them. Nur tells Deven how Imtiaz has completely robbed his jewels as well as his reputation and now he is at her mercy. Deven is drawn further into the web.
