Book five is the story of the heroic exploits of Diomedes. The First day's battle begins with a series of single combats. Nestor's son, Antilochos kills Echoplus: Ajax also Kills his victim. Ulysses is shocked at the death of ne of his friends, hurts a spear of Demophoon. It is a day of victory for the Creeks, and the Trojans begin to tremble in fear. Apollo cheers up the drooping spirits of the Trojans. Diomedes is the hero of the day. Athena inspires and gives him, indomitable courage.There is an aura of divine light around him and people feel that he is invincible. Diomedes strikes terror in the heart of the Trojans Pandarus seeks an opportunity and strikes him hard. But Diomedes asks his charioteer Sthenelus to draw out the arrow. The wound is healed up at the prayer. He pounces upon Trojans with renewed energy and vigour. Aeneas asks Panderus to mount in his chariot. Their plan is to attack Diomedes together. Diomedes fights on foot and fight frenziedly like a wild lion He hurts his spear at Pandarus and kills him. As Aeneas comes down from the chariot to prevent the dead body of his friend from being taken away and desecrated, Diomedes hurls a huge stone on his hip. At once, Venus, the mother of Aeneas comes to his rescue and escorts him to a safe place.
Diomedes is encouraged by Athene attacks he Venus grooms in pain, rushes to Olympus and seeks comfort from her mother Diona. She puts up a complaint to her father Jupiter, who advises her to leave the battle-field and confine herself to affairs of love. Venus', entry into the battle does not effectively help the Trojans.
Troy however, has Apollo and Mars to support it. Diomedes, in the near while is Still in quest of Aeneas. Apollo takes Aeneas to his temple and his wound is attended to. He asks Mars the war-god to help the Trojans in distress, and trighten Diomedes, who does not attack even the Olympians. Mars encourages Hector to "leap into the fray. "Aeneas in the meanwhile comes back, restored to his normal condition. There is a perceptible change in the tide of war.
He asks for a divine physician to heal his wound and rebukes him sharply for his inordinate thirst for blood. Jupiter does not like that Mars should cause havoc. He does not want a temporary defeat of the Greeks, no doubt, but wanton bloodshed is his abhorrence. Diomedes is still pursuing the Trojans. Menelaus in the meanwhile has got hold of a Trojan, who begs his life. He is about to spare him when. Agamemnon without any ceremony strikes down the helpless suppliant.
In Book Five, gods and goddesses directly participate in the affairs of the world the mortals. But in Book Five directly participate in the war. Athene fights on behalf of the Greeks, while Venus, Apollo and Mar's support the Trojans. Venus and Mars are seriously injured. It should however be kept in mind that Venus, whatever might be her helplessness in the battlefield is victorious in the movement of love. It is she who has prompted Paris to abduct Helen, and that has set the ball rolling.
The first day's battle is a story of carnage and bloodshed which may repel a sensitive mind. But we must remember that Homer is a chronicler of the Heroic Age when people revelled in blood. The details of the battle may not be pleasant reading. But as they were recited they certainly caught the imagination of the audience.
