Swami and Friends Summary Chapter - 19
Swami and Friends by R.K Narayan: This concluding chapter tells us of the transfer of Rajam's father from Malgudi, and the consequent exit of Rajam from Malgudi forever. The "parting present is the present that Swami gives to his "dearest friend" at the moment of departure. Rajam and his parents were supposed to leave by the five O, clock train, on Tues- day morning. Mani had known it for quite some time, but he told Swami on Mon- day night.
Rajam had strictly forbidden Mani to tell it to Swami. Swami was in pain and hurted. But he reached the station in time to bid farewell to his friend. He carried "Anderson's fairy tales to his "parting friend" Swami could not talk to Rajam, for him and his parents were surrounded by the police.
He could not even approach him when the train started. He requested Mani to at least give him the gift he had brought Mani gave the gift and he accepted it. He was further delighted to learn that Mani had given Rajam his address, and he will surely write to him. Thus did Swami part forever from his "dearest friend".
