Daven is surprised at the alacrity with which the tape recorder is sanctioned and he goes to Delhi to seek Murad's help in procuring it. Murad already seems to have fixed the deal with the local shopkeeper and the two of them make Deven buy a second-hand Japanese model at the price his college can afford. Since Deven Doesn't know anything about tape recorders, they throw in the service of Chiku, the shopkeeper's nephew, to assist him in the project. Despite his doubts and apprehensions over the quality of tape recorder and the competence of "technical assistant".Deven is pushed into a deal. What trouble and inconvenience it leads him to form the rest of the narrative.

In this chapter, Deven problems are Multiplied. Now he had got the tape recorder; Deven approaches Nur at an hour when the poet is supposed to be alone and there is no one at the house. But when he reaches his house, he finds an unusual commotion. Imtiaz Begum is ill. She fell ill after her birthday celebrations. Deven talks to Nur about the idea of taping his memories and Poetry.
Before he could agree to his proposal, news reaches Imtiaz Begum. She shouts at Deven orders him to get out of the house and forbids the poet from reciting poetry. As a disappointment Deven slips out of the house, he is summoned by Nur's first wife and told that he can interview Nur in the secluded room near the house at a price If he agrees, she will arrange when he next comes to see her. Caught between Nur's wives and their demands. Deven gives up the idea- But can't and eventually gets into another mess.
