Rajam and Mani
This chapter introduces us to a new character, a newcomer in the class, Rajam. He is the son of the superintendent of police, well dressed, intelligent and a good student and appeared to be a rival to the prestige and authority of Mani, who was annoyed and was thinking of some way to get rid of this menace that had come into his life.
He warned Swami not to be friendly with Rajam. Swami assures him by saying that he could not even dream of such a thing, as he was his best friend. But in his heart of hearts, Swami is fascinated by him and is friendly with him.
Rajam could all Mani could do, "If Mani jabbed, Rajam jabbed; if Mani clouted, he clouted, if Mani kicked, he kicked. If Mani was overloaded of the class, Rajam seemed to be nothing less. There were sure indications that Rajam was the new power in the class.
Day by day Mani looked on, it was becoming increasingly clear that a new manace had appeared in his life. "Mani wanted him to bundle him up and crack his shoulder with his club and he didn't care when Swami warned him to be careful as his father was the Superintendent of police. He was determined to vile upstart down.
One day Swami acts as a cord of communication between the two. He tried to solve the matter but Mani wanted to have a fight with him he told Swami to tell him to come near Nallappa's Grove, tomorrow evening for the fight and Rajam agreed. It was agreed that they would meet near the river.
Accordingly, Mani came to the place with his clubs and Rajam with the air gun. Both the air gun and the clubs were then dispensed with, and the complaints that they had against each other were recounted and hotly denied. The upshot was that the two suddenly decided to be friends. The fight did take place and Swami was much relieved.
