The battle continues even in the sixth Book, Diomedes is still fighting valiantly and there is none to withstand him. But he is no longer helped by Athene. In the course of the battle, he comes across the Glaucus and asks his name and race. There is a sad smile on Glaucus's face ""Why do you like to know my race?" The generations are as of the leaves, so also of mankind.
As the leaves fall, now withering in the mind, and others are put forth, and spring descends, such on the earth the race of men we find. Each in his order, a set time attends, one generation rises and another ends. It comes out that Glaucus is the grandson of Bellerophon and that their forefathers were great friends. Both Diomedes and Glaucus decide that they should fully honour their ancestral obligations.
They must not think of harming each other and keep up the holy and hereditary bond. They exchange armours to mark their friendship. Hector enters into the place and is shocked to see Paris dallying with Hellen, while the Trojan fighters are dying for his sake. He rebukes Paris but does not say anything to Helen. He has deep sympathy for Helen. Helen who hates and loves Paris at the same time complaints of her ill luck and requests
Hector to rest a while. Hector does not accept the invitation and goes to his own apartment to see his wife and son. He has a foreboding that he is very soon destined to die. Hector does not see his wife Andromache in the apartments. Later, however, he finds her on the battlement with the son and the nurse. He spreads his arms to take his son. But he is frightened by the plume on his father's head. He clings to the nurse. By putting off the helmet, he takes his son in his arms.
Andromache in tears appeals to her husband not to go to the battlefield for she has a fore-sight that he will die. She has lost so many of his near and dear ones and therefore, clings to him with all her grace and pathetic tenderer. Hector, is, no doubt moved at his wife's importunity. But he thinks of his honour that he is not ready to sell for a mess of pottage. He consoles her, but he knows his helpless wife will be dragged into slavery and forced to live a life of shame. Hector parts from his wife, and Paris accompanies him to the battle. Andromache goes to the palace, and casts a longing lingering look behind to see her husband.
Iliad book-6 Critical analysis
In the book-six we get a striking contrast between Hector and Paris. Hector is basically a soldier, determined to save his country even at the end of his life. Paris, like, Nero, is fiddling while Rome is burning. He dallies with Helen when the whole of Troy is lost in bloodbath.
The country, for Hector, is greater than even his wife and son. He has learned to be brave at all times to fight in the first ranks of the Trojans'. There are some touching scenes amidst the blunderbuss and trumpet of war. Diomedes, is not known for sentiments meets Glanous and comes to know by chance that their fore-fathers were friends.
They, therefore, like to retain the old hereditary bond of friendship. This has a human touch, which has a universal appeal. Glamour is a crude philosopher. The appearance of Andromache heightens the pathos of the book. We know nothing about her physical charms. Homer is reluctant to give details.
But what we know is the Andromache is a loving wife and a mother. She has none of the nobility or strength of Brutus's Portia. Yet we see drawn towards her. There are tears in her eyes, she sticks to her husband and appeals to him not to stake his life. A Spartan may feel shocked at this.

Helenus has the gift of avgury and knows that Athene and Apollo, prefer an individual combat to determine the fate of Helen. He, therefore, Hector to challenge a Greek in single combat. The Greeks feel a little shaky when they hear of Hector. Menelaus offers to fight with him. But Agamemnon, with all his brotherly solicide refuses to allow him to fight with a person, so much his superior.

A council is held to decide that they should build strong walls for their fortification. The Trojans also hold a council and decide on the advise of Athens and Helen; the cause of all troubles. She should be sent back to the Greeks.
Paris agrees to return the treasures, he has stolen, but not Helen. The great protective walls are completed and the Greeks have a grand feast and carousel. Throughout Jupiter's thunder peals can be heard, which indicate divine wrath at the prolongation of war.
The Greeks, offer sacrifice and fall asleep with a clear conscience. The Trojans are divided in their opinion. Priam, and for that matter, the majority are in favour of retaining Helen. Hector seems to be fighting for the cause of his people. He is willing to fight in single combat with a Greek hero, he does not agree that Helen should be given to the winner. Athene represents the Trojans, who believe in the futility of war. But Priam is completely blind to the horrors of war, and wants Helen to stay. And he is supported by the majority of people. It proves that the Trojans, at least for the time being, have lost their reason.
