Homer Iliad Book 15 Summary and Analysis
Book Fifteen: As soon as Jupiter wakes up, the grim truth dawns upon him, He becomes angry and takes Juno to task. Juno, however, swears that she is not responsible for Poseidon's action, still perhaps under the seductive charm of his wife, He forgives her and accepts her explanation in good grace. He goes to the extent of explaining why the Trojans are enjoying an initial victory. For, he assures her, that the fall of Troy is certain.
Achilles' command will make Patroclus join the battle. Hector will kill him. That will completely demoralise the Trojans and the fall of Troy will be quickened. Jupiter has shown his partisanship only intending to keep his promise to Thetis. The explanation seems authentic, and Juno, elated at this revelation, tells the other gods and goddesses of the shape of things to come. Jupiter commands Iris to go to Poseidon and ask him not to interfere in the battle anymore. Poseidon grows quite angry and challenges his authority.
In ancient times, the three brother gods were given the kingdoms of air, sea and darkness, but on earth, where war is taking place, no one is safe. Why should Jupiter feel so much pride in himself? Iris pacifies him, and he steps down to the sea. Brihaspati knows, that it was decided that he should be the lord of air, Poseidon of the sea and lord of Hades. We realize that he is, no doubt, a fit indulgent to the Trojans but that indulgence is to keep up the promise to Thetis that Achilles will avenge the insult to him by Agamemnon.
