Homer Iliad Book-14 Summary
The Greek leaders namely Ulysses Diomedes, Nester and Agamemnon meet in a Council. Agamemnon gives the suggestion that they would rather return home. Diomedes, always famous for courage king and trepidation, records his protest against the cowardice of the king and proposes to continue the battle.
The other leaders strongly support him, and Poseidon fully approves of their decision. Juno feels happy at the action of Poseidon and wants him to prolong his help. She is worried that Jupiter should get changed and the help, so long extended by Poseidon, may be retracted She therefore, adopts a ruse and determines to divert the attention of Jupiter with big powers of blandishment.

There is, in this Book, a shifting of the balance of power at two levels mortal and divine. Jupiter, for the time being, is made inactive and Poseidon and Juno have full sway to the advantage of the Greeks. The scene becomes comical because of human weakness. Jupiter, the omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent god has all the ills that flesh is heir to.
Jupiter is extremely sensitive to feminine charm and is coaxed by Juno and that offers a splendid opportunity to Poseidon and the Greeks. Juno indirectly teaches her husband a lesson. The Iliad is the story of the violation of hospitality through Paris, and that spells disaster for Troy, Jupiter may be charged with similar, if not for worse, lapses. Earthly beauties were seduced by Jupiter without the consent or knowledge of their husbands. In this book, Jupiter appears to be passion's slave.
