Summary of Book- 2 Homer of the Iliad
Jupiter now thinks fulfilling the promise made to That is. He will send a deceptive dream to Agamemnon that the fall of Troy is imminent. The vision accordingly comes in the shape of Nestor, who encourages him to attack Troy with all his forces.Agamemnon wakes up at the meeting of the chiefs and decides to test the temper of his soldiers. Most of them are sick of fighting. His plan is to tell the army that there is no point in fighting uselessly anymore. He can look into the future that the soldiers will rejoice at the possibility of going back home.
At this psychological moment, the other chiefs will persuade them to fight for the national honour of Greece and that will give a crushing blow to the Trojans Following a plan, Agamemnon speaks eloquently about the sufferings and privations, the Greek soldiers have experienced.
They should come back to the long-lost wives and children. They feel happy and shout in joy. The Greek forces are mobilized by Juno and Athene. There is a wave of happiness and joy in them. At the instance of June, Athene comes to Ulysses and induces him to exhort the Greek soldiers to come back and fight till the last-ditch.

His persuasive- eloquence has the desired effect. They all come back. There is an ugly and ill-shaped Greek named Thersites. He is a past master in the art of running down the dignitaries. He starts denouncing Agamemnon's greed, selfishness and supreme indifference to the suffering of the Greeks.He addresses the soldiers as "Women of Greece. "Nestor also exhorts the soldiers to vindicate their national honour. Agamemnon also appeals to the soldiers to fight valiantly in a noble cause. Nevertheless, he sets the battle in an array for fighting against the Trojans.
Jupiter seeks to prove that a fight without Achilles is doomed to end in futility. Jupiter has sent a false dream and a false sense of assurance. In the ensuing battles, it will appear that the Greeks without Achilles are like a ship without a rudder. Their reverses will vindicate the honour of Achilles who, eventually will be drawn into the battle.
