Huxley's views about snobberies of different kinds
Introduction:
In the present essay the writer talks about those snobs who give great importance to their social standing and hate others. In the modern society there are different kinds of people, who are suffering from different kinds of snobberies: Some people are suffering from disease-snobbery. Such people suffer from both light diseases and hard diseases. On the basis of their diseases, they try to show their superiority in the society.
Such people have sufficient time. They are very rich but they have lack of sufficient health. They suffer from some disease which is the outcome of their being gluttons. Such people go from one medical centre to another medical centre.
They go from one doctor to another fashionable doctor for their treatment, which is really a problem. The society always sympathises for patients but the people do not give a large number of sympathy or respect to such patients.
Another kind of snobbery is booze-snobbery. Under it people feel proud drinking wine. In the modern age the drunkards perpetually drink strong wine but some selected people drink cocktails.
In the modern society alocholism is socially permissible. Men are addicted to drinking wine, but in some areas well-to-do ladies are habituated of drinking wine. Under it women of all ages from the age of 15 to 70, are accustomed to drinking wine. If they do not drink publically, they drink privately sitting in an anti-room of a party.
Another kind of snobbery is that which is modern-snobbery. Under it a man collects more and more articles. It helps the producers because the industralist sells his article through it.
Another kind of snobbery is art-snobbery. It has two aspects, platonic and Unplatonic. Platnoic art snobs are the appreciators of art but the unplatonic art-snobs appreciate the objects of art and buy and collect things. In this way these unplatonic art-snobs are of double breeds. On the one side they believe in culture-snobbery and on the other side they believe in possession-snobbery.
The writer believes that unplatonic art snobs having collected the object of art give the proof of their culture. They get respect in the society on its basis. On the other hand, they also collect money. So both the qualities of culture-snobbery and possession-snobbery are found under it. Such snobs collect surprising money with the collection of art in future which they cannot get with the fleet of motor-cars.
In short, a manufacturer of motor cars assumes the possession snobbery greater than culture snobbery. He tells the people that those people who have less money, are smaller than those people, who have a lot of money.
