Homer Iliad Book 20 Summary
Book Twenty :A meeting of gods and goddesses is summoned by Jupiter There he permits them to help the Greeks and the Trojans. In short, the previous embargo is lifted. Juno, Poseidon, Athene, Mercury and Vulcan help the Greeks, White Apollo, Venus, Mars, Latona and Diana are the partisans of Troy. Mars incites Aeneas to meet Achilles, and he does so. But as soon as Aeneas seems to be imperilled, Poseidon carries him away.
Poseidon is the help mate of the Greeks and yet he helps Aeneas only because she knows that Aeneas is destined to propagate a new family elsewhere. As Achilles kills his younger brother Polydrores, Hector likes to encounter Achilles to avenge his death.
Apollo, however, wraps Hector four times and makes it difficult for Achilles to attack him. Achilles is determined to crush hector as soon as the mist is lifted. Being pulled in his attempt to kill either Aeneas or Hector, he starts killing the lesser luminaries. He leaps into the river to kill those seeking shelter in the water.
Analysis
Achilles is the hero of the day. Although, some gods and goddesses are directly involved in the battle. This certainly slashes down the human interest of the story. Man's heroism or powers are of little avail since Olympians are actively man evening in his affairs.Man for all practical purposes is a marionette. Book Twenty carries the impact of destiny. And Jupiter takes infinite pains to vindicate Destiny. Achilles, in his mad passion for revenge, starts killing the Trojans without any discrimination. That is why, Jupiter is restraining Achilles's rampage, so that the persons not ordained by Destiny to die may be spared.
