Homer Iliad Book 19 Summary
They bring to Achilles the new helmet, armour and shield All the onlookers are dazzled at their brightness. In no time, he the Greek camp to seek reconciliation with his once-bitter enemy Agamemnon. Thetis has advised him not to harbour any malice or ill-will against anybody.The news that he is coming spreads like a bonfire and everybody comes out to have a look at him. Achilles sincerely feels sorry for Agamemnon. Not to be beaten by Achilles in generosity, Agamemnon admits that he is also to blame. Both attribute their delusion to Jupiter and Destiny.
Agamemnon gladly offers him Briseis. Achilles, however, has nothing to do with a woman. His blood is boiling for revenge. Ulysses intervenes and suggests that Achilles and the army should be fed well before proceeding to the war.
Achilles is impulsive and impatient, he spurns the suggestion at first. He is soon prevailed upon by good sense and he agrees to the suggestion. He does not like to eat and drink and wash his blood-stained hands. But strangely enough, Athene, at the command of Jupiter, nourishes his body with nectar and ambrosia. Briseis very much feels sad at the death of Patroclus, as he was kind and generous to her.
Achilles puts on his armour and mounts his chariot to go to the battlefield. He also takes with him the asked spear. He tells with a taunt to the horses-Zauthus and Balius, but they must not leave on the field as they did.
Juno gives a human voice to one of the horses and replies that it was not his fault. He further points out that Patroclus's destiny is responsible for his doom. He further says that Achilles may survive that day, but he is also doomed to die very soon. This is, however, no news to Achilles.
A CRITIQUE OF BOOK NINETEEN
The most important thing in this Book is the reconciliation of Achilles and Agamemnon. Both of them view each other in their generosity Agamemnon goes to the extent of offering Briseis, who was once the bone of contention with equal generosity Achilles refuses the offer. Achilles, wrath so long directed against Agamemnon is now directed against Hector.
In the mourning of Briseis and the death of Patroclus, there is a ring of sincerity. Ulysses says about Patroclus: ' He knew how to be kind to all men'. A single sentence sums up the nobility of the character of Patroclus. That Destiny is the supreme force is re-stated when one of the heroes of Achilles tells him that Patroclus is the victim of Fate.
