The Iliad Book -17 summary
Book Seventeen :
Not satisfied with the death of Patroclus, Hector strips the armour and puts it on. He even wants to possess the dead body. Jupiter does not approve of Hector's action. He, however, does not punish him, for he knows that his days are numbered.
Patroclus charioteer, Automaton comes in front of Athenes. Menelaus kills Podes, a friend of Hector. Jupiter is still helping the Trojans effectively. And that is why Ajax advises the Greeks to inform Achilles of his terrible loss.
Menelaus and Meriones, therefore, decide that the dead body of Patroclus should be taken to Achilles and they are sure that his maddening grief will be fully exploited.
Book 17 Analysis
Jupiter in this Book seems to be mentally undecided. Once he sends Athene to inspire the Greeks' action, is not very usual for him and again he dispatches Apollo to instil courage into the heart of Hector. Moreover, he covers the battlefield in mist and gives ample time to the Trojans to muster strong. There is an underlying irony in this Book.The Trojans are jubilant at the death of Patroclus, and Hector grabs Patroclus' armour and puts it on. He does not realize that this glory brings in its wake the certainty of Hector's doom. After his death, Patroclus, a tiny figure, in his lifetime, assumes unimaginable dimensions.
