According to Pt. Nehru, " English is our major window on the modern world. " The importance of English is noPw quite visible throughout the world. It is an easy means of communication, English is the mother tongue of almost 300 million people in the world. With the growth of trade and commerce, it has spread far beyond England and now it has been accepted as an international language by all.
It is only through English that we can establish social, economic, political and cultural relations with other countries of the world. In the words of F.G. French, " No language ancient and modern can be compared with English in the number of its speakers, writers and readers all over the world. " English has also acquired an important place in India. Modern science has reduced today the vast dimensions of the globe to the size of a small ball. We can not ignore English under such circumstances.

If under sentimental urges we should give up English, we would cut ourselves off from the living stream of evergrowing knowledge. The importance of English can be understood fully under the following headings-
1. English As Lingua - Franca:
English is the lingua - franca of the world. It is the language by which we can exchange our views with the people of other countries. English is a mother - tongue in the U.K., U.S.A., Canada, Australia, New - Zealand and South Africa. It is taught as a second language in India, Pakistan, Africa, France, Russia etc.
Near about 200 million people in the world speak and understand English. It is one of the six languages of the U.N.O. and the link language of the commonwealth countries. It plays an important role in international trade, politics and commerce. English is the language of cultural exchange. It has brought all the countries on one platform.
Its study allows Indians to get employment not only in India but also in other countries. Indians can acknowledge high technology through the English language. In fact developed countries like U.K., the U.S.A. and etc. publish their book in English which are beneficial for Indians. Thus it is through this language that Indians maintained and still maintain their social, political, commercial and friendly relations.
As such English occupies a unique place in our national life. According to F.G. French, " By accidents of history and by the rapid speed of industrial development, science, technology, international trade and by something like an explosion in the speed and ease of travel and by all the factors which have broken down frontiers and forced nations into close interdependence. English has become a world language. It is the means of international communication; there is no other. "
2. English is the language of Science and Technology:
English is a rich language regarding literature, science and technology. It is a means of acquiring ever-growing knowledge. It is the key which opens the gate of Western sciences and arts but some of them also acquire mastery over them. Some of the Indian scholars like Raman. M.K. Gandhi. Radha Krishnan. R.N. Tagore, etc. are known throughout the world only because of their command over English and the great ideas they expressed through it. U.G.C. ( University Grant Commission ) observed, " .... English is the only means of preventing our isolation from the world and we will act unwisely if allow ourselves to be enveloped in the folds of a dark curtain of ignorance.
Our students who are undergoing training at schools, which will admit them either to university or to vocation must acquire sufficient mastery of English to give them excess to the treasures of knowledge, and in the universities, no student should be allowed to take a degree. does not acquire the ability to read with the facility and understanding of the works of English authors. 3. A Library Language:
English is known as key to the storehouse of knowledge. It is, therefore, has great importance as a library language in India as well as in the world. The graduates. postgraduates and Research scholars need to consult the library frequently. Good reference books are only found in the English language. English is the language of science, medicine, law, agriculture, engineering and modern technology.
The Kothari Commission ( 1964 - 66 ) has rightly presented the view that English would play a vital role in higher education as an important library language. Books of all branches of knowledge are available in English. 4. English as a language of unity/a link language:
Pt. Nehru once said, '' If you push out English, does Hindi fully take its place? I hope it will, I am sure it will. But I wish to avoid the danger of one unifying factor being pushed out without another unifying factor fully taking its place. In that event, there will be a gap, a hiatus. The creation of any such hiatus or gap must be avoided at all costs. It is very vital to do so in the interest of the unity of the country.
It is this that leads me to the conclusion that English is likely to have an important place in the foreseeable future. " In India, different languages are prevalent in different states. In such conditions, there must be a common language which can be understood by all the states. English serves this purpose well. In this connection constitution of India had envisaged the provision in article 348 ( b ) ( iii ) as, " Of all orders, rules, regulations and by-laws issued under this Constitution or under any law made by Parliament or the Legislature of a state, shall be in the English language. "
English is also a medium of correspondence between Union Government and State Government. The working of the Supreme Court of India is conducted only in English. Interstate trade is depend on English. There is a great impact of English on an educated class of Indian society. It is the language of high-tech - offices.
It will be no exaggeration if we say that English is the measurement of Indian forward society. Without the knowledge of English, we can not survive on the world map and our country can not be developed till 2020. this is the way by which we can command over the trade and politics of the world.
5. English as a base of our literary development and source of other languages :
English is a great - treasure of knowledge. The credit of developing Indian languages go to English. Indian writers developed their own language and literature by reading English. The development of modern Indian novels, short stories, drama and literary criticism might be possible due to the study of English literature.
Almost all the Indian languages use English phrases and idioms. The contribution of the English language is also in the enrichment of the vocabulary of Indian languages.
